McKay Smith, a former Long Beach State and professional volleyball player, joined the LBSU coaching staff in 2017 as a volunteer assistant coach and after helping lead the Beach to back-to-back NCAA National Championships, was elevated to assistant coach in July of 2019.
Since joining the Long Beach State coaching staff, Smith has coached 27 AVCA All-Americans, including four AVCA National Players of the Year in Moni Nikolov (2025), Alex Nikolov (2022), TJ De Falco, and Josh Tuaniga (2018) in addition to helping guide Long Beach State to the 2025 National Championship.
In his tenure, Long Beach State has missed the postseason just once and has made four straight appearances in the NCAA Final Four.
A 2020 AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award winner, Smith works extensively with player development and saw Long Beach State garner four AVCA All-Americans and five Big West All-Conference selections during the COVID-19 shortened season.
A decorated coach with several years of experience at the collegiate level as well as at Junior Nationals, Smith previously served an assistant coach and strength coordinator for the 2017 State Champion Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team. With Smith on the bench, the Pirates finished the season with a 21-1 record and were a perfect 8-0 in conference.
Smith previously played for Orange Coast College where he was named 2011 Conference MVP and was first in the state in hitting percentage. He went on to enjoy a three-year career at Long Beach State where he excelled at middle blocker and was named team captain.
Following his collegiate career, Smith went on to play professionally for SKV Havirov in the Czech Republic from 2014-15.
Additionally, Smith won two Gold Medals as an assistant coach, as well as three of Bronze Medals as a head coach for the 949 Volleyball Club at Junior Nationals.
