Matt Prosser enters his fourth year on the 49er Men's Volleyball coaching staff, and second as a full-time assistant. Prosser will handle recruiting, opponent scouting, and help with block defense.
The former 49er great was a member of the 1999 NCAA Finalist squad that finished the season with a 22-4 mark. In his senior season, Prosser averaged 3.88 kills, 1.74 blocks, and 1.21 digs per game as a middle blocker. During his tenure at The Beach, Prosser was a three-time all-conference selection, a two-time All-American, and a Freshman All-American in 1998. A four-year starter, Prosser earned first team All-America honors in 2000 and second team honors in 1999. On the 49er career charts, Prosser ranks No. 14 on the 49er career kills chart with 1,147 kills and No. 1 in hitting percentage at .447. One of the most dominant blockers in the country,
Prosser recorded 510 career blocks, a mark which ranks No. 4 all-time at Long Beach State. Prosser led the 49ers in hitting percentage three consecutive years (.428 in 1998, .438 in 1999 and .489 in 2000). His .489 hitting percentage in 2000 is the second-best single season mark in school history. Also, his 1.74 block per game average in 1999 ranks No. 4 in 49er annals. Prosser holds the 49er single-match record for hitting percentage (.867) vs. LMU on March 18, 1998.
After his playing days at LBSU, Prosser played professional volleyball for IGM Maribor Slovenia (2003-04). Prosser is currently on the AVP Tour, and has been ranked in the top-50 the past four summers. In the summer of 2004 he placed 25th at both the Huntington Beach and Manhattan Beach Opens. In the summer of 2005, he and his partner finished 17th three times during the 2005 AVP season, including the Huntington Beach Open, and 25th three times. The 2006 AVP tour saw Prosser post a career-best ninth place finish in the AVP Birmingham Open with partner Dain Blanton, an Olympic Gold Medalist. He never finished lower than 25th place during the 2006 AVP season, and finished the season ranked 39th on tour, playing in 12 tournaments. Prosser ranked 16th in blocks and 24th in kill percentage.
Also in the summer of 2006 Prosser represented the U.S. while participating in the World University Championships of Beach Volleyball in Protaras, Cyprus. Prosser and his partner, John Mayer (Pepperdine '05), finished with the bronze medal and were the first American team to ever win a medal in the World University Championships for Beach Volleyball. Prosser and Mayer defeated teams from Japan, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Cyprus. In 2007 Prosser competed on the AVP Beach Tour, but participated in just eight matches due to a foot injury. He finished with a new career-high seventh place in the first tournament of the season at the Huntington Beach Open with Mayer as his partner. The duo also placed ninth at the AVP Cincinatti Open and they were ranked in the Top 50 players on the Tour.
Prosser graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in Broadcast Journalism in the spring of 2006.
