Former Long Beach State All-American, professional men’s volleyball player, and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, Scott Touzinsky, returned to the Beach in 2017 as an assistant coach and in his first year helped the team win the 2018 National Championship.
With Touzinsky on the bench, Long Beach State kicked off the season with a program-record 24-straight victories and captured the Big West Regular Season and Conference Tournament titles. The Beach finished the season with a 28-1 overall record and a 9-1 Big West mark en route to bringing home the program’s second National Title.
Under Touzinsky’s tutelage, Long Beach State garnered five All-America selections and six Big West All-Conference accolades. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga was named AVCA National Player of the Year and NCAA Tournament MVP, while junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco took home Big West Player of the Year.
Prior to returning to Long Beach State, Touzinsky was as an outside hitter both professionally and on the international stage. As a member of the USA Men's National Team, Touzinsky won a Gold Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the World League, and played professionally for more than 13 seasons in nine different countries.
Touzinsky started his collegiate career at Long Beach State with a bang as he was named the AVCA Co-Freshman of the Year in 2001. He led the team in kills as both a junior and a senior, and ranks fifth in career kills at Long Beach State with 1,642. He remains the program's service ace leader with 158, and owns three of the top four single-season marks for aces in school history. Touzinsky also holds the single-game record of nine aces in one match.
His best season came in 2004, when Touzinsky led the Beach to a 28-7 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Championship match. A consensus first-team All-American as a senior, Touzinsky also earned First-Team All-MPSF honors and garnered NCAA All-Tournament Team accolades.
