Scott Coopman enters his third year with the Long Beach State men’s basketball program after spending the previous four years as an assistant coach at Orange Coast College. Coopman will be the 49ers Director of Basketball Operations this year after serving as the Administrative Assistant last year. His initial year at Long Beach State saw him serve as the team’s Video Coordinator. Coopman will wear many hats, but primary responsibilites will include organization of summer camps, team travel, film exchange and academics/study hall. He will also serve as the team’s liason with adidas in ordering uniforms and equipment.
Coopman helped lead OCC back to respectability in the California JC circuit. In 2004-05, the Pirates finished 15-12, and in 2002-03 the Pirates went 20-13, their first 20-win season in 13 years. OCC finished 8-6 in the Orange Empire Conference and were the No. 18 seed in the 2003 Southern California State JC Tournament. OCC lost to Mt. SAC in the first round of the playoffs. Under the guidance of Head Coach Steve Spencer, Coopman was involved in on-the-floor coaching (guards and wings), coordination of recruiting duties and scouting, assisted with ordering team apparel and shoes and was the coordinator of all video editing and film exchange.
Prior to OCC, Coopman spent five years as an assistant coach at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. A traditional power in the NAIA ranks, Westmont finished the 1998-99 season with a No. 3 national ranking and were NAIA National Semifinalists finishing 29-6. In 1999-00 the Warriors won the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, finishing 21-11. In his five years at Westmont, the Warriors compiled a record of 107-51 with two trips to the NAIA National Tournament and four consecutive 20-plus win seasons. Coopman successfully recruited All-State players from California, Washington and Idaho and worked with the post players on the court. He also was the film exchange coordinator and scout.
In 2004 Coopman was the Adult League Coordinator for National Junior Basketball. He created and operated adult basketball leagues in Orange County and recruited teams and individuals to play via the newspaper and internet marketing.
A 1996 graduate of UC Irvine with a B.A. in Social Ecology and a minor in History, Coopman hails from Modesto and graduated from Downey High School. He has worked numerous basketball camps over the past 10 years including camps at UCLA, Stanford, Purdue, UC Irvine, Arizona State and California. Coopman and his wife Grace reside in Los Angeles.
