Long Beach State Powers Past Cal State Fullerton in Straight Sets

Hamaker, King, and Maxwell lead the charge as the Beach hit .349 and lock down defensively for a convincing Big West win.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— Long Beach State dominated at the net and from the service line, sweeping Cal State Fullerton in Big West volleyball Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State stormed out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the opening set 25-10 over Cal State Fullerton. The Beach capitalized on Titan attack errors early, jumping ahead 6-1 behind kills from Sidney Hamaker and strong setting by Madi Maxwell. Cal State Fullerton cut the deficit to 10-8 after a block by Hannah Hass and Ketesia Hall followed by a Hall kill, but LBSU responded with a dominant run.
Elise Agi sparked the surge with a service ace and added a string of tough serves that fueled a 12-0 stretch. Hamaker and Rhiann Sheffie combined for multiple kills during the spurt, while Pola Bujnarowska came off the bench to register a block and a solo stuff at the net. Maxwell closed the set with a kill off Logan King's serve to seal the win for the Beach.

The Titans opened strong, using a block from Hall and Elon Smith and a service ace by Hass to take a 3-1 lead. But the Beach quickly regrouped, fueled by kills from King and Agi to spark a 7-1 run that flipped the set in their favor at 8-4.
Cal State Fullerton hung close midway through the frame, with Sarah Schubert tallying multiple kills and Carvalho Kahea landing an ace to trim the deficit to 19-16. Long Beach State answered immediately as King and Agi combined for clutch kills down the stretch. After a Titan timeout at 23-19, the Beach closed the door, sealing the set on consecutive Fullerton attack errors to move ahead by two.

After a service ace by Anna Jelinek made it 2-0, LBSU rattled off six straight points behind King and Thomas, who combined for three kills to build a 7-1 cushion. Cal State Fullerton briefly slowed the surge with kills from Schubert and Emilia Graham, but a block by Sheffie and a service ace from Tatum Hoff stretched the lead to 13-3. Maxwell later added an ace of her own to push the margin to 17-4. LBSU closed strong as Hamaker and King each delivered late kills, with a Titan attack error sealing the 25-11 decision.
The Beach held the Titans to -.030 hitting for the night (20-23-99) and held a 10-7 blocking advantage. Led by Hamaker, who reached double-digit kills for the fourth consecutive match with 11, Long Beach State hit .349 in the match (41-11-86). The Beach recorded 46 digs, compared to 28 for Cal State Fullerton (6-8, 1-1 Big West). King tallied 10 kills, seven digs, and four blocks. Maxwell posted 30 assists, nine digs, and three blocks. Agi recorded a match-high 10 digs and six kills.
