USC scored two goals as the teams played three 30-minute periods.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State controlled the early momentum and had some great chances, but No. 5 USC came away with both goals in a 90-minute exhibition between the two teams at George Allen Field Wednesday night.

Long Beach State went to work in the early minutes, getting Washington transfer Radisson Banks quickly involved with a shot just wide. USC had an opportunity of their own that followed, but the first 30 minutes ended scoreless as Banks earned another shot before the end of the 30 as the Beach outshot the Trojans in that first period 3-2.

Aurora Schuck got in on the action with a strong save turning away a USC breakaway as the second period got started. The Beach had a tremendous chance to move into the lead, as freshman Natelle El Mokbel was fouled in a dangerous position, and on the ensuing free kick a header from Jordan Candelaria went just off the post.

USC broke the deadlock with a goal from Murphy Walsh, and the second period ended with the Trojans holding onto a 1-0 lead. Long Beach State opened the third period with another strong chance, finding Cherrie Cox in behind but Trojan keeper Phoebe Carver was able to snatch the ball away from the LBSU forward in the key moment. The Trojans then added a second in the 72nd minute.

El Mokbel helped create one final opportunity for Long Beach State in the closing minutes, fouled just at the top of the penalty box. The freshman took the free kick herself, and skimmed the top of the crossbar as the scrimmage came to a close.

Long Beach State will begin the regular season on August 14, hosting Hawai'i in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m., also at George Allen Field.
