Men’s Basketball Closes 2024-25 Season With Loss To Cal Poly

3/8/2025 6:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Long Beach State lost Kam Martin in the first half, Devin Askew in the second and couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Devin Askew scored 21 points in the first half to help keep Long Beach State in the mix with Cal Poly, but an injury to the star guard in the second half stymied the Beach and Cal Poly went on to an 83-69 win the final game of the season for LBSU.

Askew went on a heater for Long Beach State (7-25, 3-17 Big West) to keep the Beach in touch with Cal Poly (14-18, 8-12 Big West) who were also hot from outside in a high-scoring first half.

Already shorthanded with just eight players playing Saturday, a collision in the opening minutes including Kam Martin knocked the promising freshman out of the game for the Beach. Cal Poly responded with some hot shooting, going 11-for-22 in the first half from three to answer a spectacular half from Askew, who was 7-for-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from three to keep the Beach in reach despite a 47-point first half from the Mustangs at 47-41.

Just 30 seconds into the second half, the Beach lost a second starting guard as Askew suffered an injury and was knocked out of the contest, leaving six players to finish the game for the Beach. Cal Poly immediately capitalized, turning an eight-point lead into a 15-point lead with a 7-0 run and Long Beach State never recovered.

Derrick Michael Xzavierro had a nice night for Long Beach State, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks, while graduate Austin Johnson finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds, passing 800 points scored in his career as he was honored prior to the game as he closed out his Division I career.
