Women’s Basketball Sends Off Seniors With a Dominant Win Over UC Irvine, 73-52

Patricia Chung had a season-high of 21 points while Rachel Loobie had a career-high of 18 rebounds.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A strong effort on defense led Long Beach State to a 73-52 victory over UC Irvine in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach started the game on a 7-0 run as Mykelle Richards hit back-to-back baskets. UCI answered with two quick baskets before Savannah Tucker hit one from three-point range to extend the lead to 11-4. The Anteaters came out of the first-quarter media timeout on a 9-0 run to take a two-point advantage. Rachel Loobie got on the board to tie the game at 13 as the first quarter ended.
JaQuoia Jones-Brown opened the second with a quick three. A 6-0 Anteaters' spurt returned the lead to UCI with 7:20 left, 19-16. Jones-Brown tied the game with her second three. Both teams traded baskets until Patricia Chung's back-to-back field goals gave the Beach the lead at halftime, 32-28.
The third quarter started with both teams going back and forth, and Jones-Brown hitting her third three of the game to make it a seven-point lead for LBSU. UCI went on a 7-0 run to tie the game, 37-37, but the Beach answered with nine consecutive points to take a 46-37 advantage with 2:41 left and leave UCI scoreless for five minutes. The drought ended with back-to-back threes for the Anteaters, but the Beach answered back with Chung adding another layup, and LBSU kept the lead at the end of the third, 48-45.
The Beach kept their momentum, extending the lead, 60-48, after an 11-0 run, with Tucker adding two more threes to the scoresheet. Redshirt sophomore Kenan Ka added back-to-back baskets to extend the Beach lead, 71-52. Tucker closed the game with two more points as Loobie cleaned the board for the Beach. Shooting 3-for-3 from the three-point line in the fourth, the Beach defeated UC Irvine by 19 on Senior Day.
The LBSU victory broke a four-game UC Irvine winning streak in the Black and Blue Rivalry. Long Beach State (15-12, 11-7 Big West) outscored the Anteaters (19-9, 13-5 Big West) in the paint, 28-16, and outrebounded the Anteaters, 54-37 (a new season-best in the rebounding category for LBSU). From the field, the Beach shot 45% (27-of-60) while holding UCI to 28.3% (20-of-76).
