Senior Devin Askew passed 1,000 career points in his Division I career with 19 points and 8 assists against the Runners.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State battled to multiple leads in overtime against Cal State Bakersfield, but Runners' star Jemel Jones had one more answer, hitting a go-ahead basket as time expired to hand Long Beach State an 88-87 (OT) defeat in the Walter Pyramid.
In the last five home games for Long Beach State (7-22, 3-14) the Beach has been a total of three points behind in regulation, but has lost all five games, the latest coming against Cal State Bakersfield (13-17, 7-11 Big West).
Jones had 37 for Cal State Bakersfield, scoring six in overtime including the buzzer beater. It was Long Beach State that got the action going in extra time, though, as TJ Wainwright buried a three to start an action-packed final five minutes to give the Beach a 75-72 lead.
A pair of free throws put the Beach up four with three minutes to play, but Jones answered to cut the lead back to one possession and a three from Marvin McGhee III put the Runners in front. A 3-pointer from Devin Askew put the beach back in front by two, and the Beach pulled in front by three with 56 seconds remaining on two free throws.
Jones cut the lead to one on the next trip down, and after a miss from leading scorer TJ Wainwright the Runners found Jones in the paint for the win.
Down seven at the half, Long Beach State trailed by as many as nine in the second half but bounced back with a 12-2 run capped by a fast break basket from Andrew Nagy to take the lead at 50-49. Long Beach State would extend their lead to as many as nine at the 9:50 mark on an Austin Johnson turnaround. The graduate big man would finish with 13 points, but was limited with foul trouble and his exit with 3:34 to play in regulation helped CSUB pull back even with the Beach to force overtime.
Wainwright scored 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting from three, while Devin Askew added 19 points on 8 assists, passing 1,000 points scored in his Division I career, with 529 of those points coming this season with the Beach. Andrew Nagy set a career-high with 14 points off of the bench while Derrick Michael Xzavierro matched his career best in his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Long Beach State will now travel to face Black and Blue Rivalry foe UC Irvine at 7 p.m. on Saturday, the first of two final road games before LBSU will finish the season at home against Cal Poly on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m.
