Looking at the Infielders and Outfielders
LONG BEACH, Calif.—The 71st season of Long Beach State baseball begins this weekend as the Dirtbags host Northwestern. In the second part of the preview, we conclude with LBSU's infielders and outfielders.
INFIELDERS
Connor Charpiot moves from left field and is at the top of the depth chart at first base. Long Beach State's leading hitter a year ago (.314), Charpiot reached base 43 (including 30 in a row) of the 46 games he played. He hit four home runs and drove in 29 runs.
Junior Armando Briseno started at each of the four infield positions last season. That versatility will continue as Briseno could play second, short, or third in 2025. He raised his batting average from .221 to .292 to finish second on the team in the category over the final 22 games of the 2024 campaign.
Junior Ty Borgogno is the incumbent at third base. He led LBSU and was tied for eighth in the Big West in sacrifice hits with eight. Borgogno ranked 45th in Division I in sac hits per game (.18) and 68th in sacrifice hits. The Chino Hills native stole 12 bases (in 14 attempts), the fifth most on the club.
Freshman Jake Evans' impressive Fall has resulted in a chance for the local product (Los Alamitos HS) to play at either second or third base. As a senior at Los Al, he was ranked 18th among California high school shortstops by PerfectGame.org. A first-team All-League, first-team All-CIF, and first-team All-Orange County selection, he hit .354 with 31 RBI and a .476 slugging percentage.
A pair of transfers, Nathan Cadena and Dylan Lina, could see action at either first or third base. Coming to Long Beach from San Jose State, Cadena started 108 of the 125 games he played for the Spartans over three seasons. He hit .316 as a sophomore as SJSU won the Mountain West Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regionals at Stanford. Lina hit 18 home runs and drove in 60 RBI over two seasons. If Lina doesn't play in the field, he could end up as the DH for the Dirtbags.
Newcomers Easton Elliot and Trotter Enright are in the mix to play at second and shortstop, respectively. Elliot transfers to Long Beach State from Oral Roberts, where he played in 20 games for ORU as a junior. He began his career at Johnson County Community College, where the team went 102-27 in two seasons. Coming to California for Summer ball, Elliot was named the Defensive MVP of the 2024 California Collegiate All-Star Game for the Arroyo Seco Saints. He was selected All-CCL and All-CCL South Division after leading the CCL in stolen bases with 17. Elliott hit .352 with 21 RBI and scored 22 runs for the Saints.
Enright is a 2024 graduate of Camarillo High School, where he led the squad to the 2024 CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Championship, the first for the school since 2002, by driving in the game-winning run in the championship game against St. Francis. He hit 395 with a .613 on-base percentage, one home run, 17 RBI, and 32 runs scored as a senior on the way to being named first-team All-League and Offensive Player of the Year.
OUTFIELDERS
Right fielder Kyle Ashworth was named Honorable Mention All-Conference in 2024. He tied for the Big West lead and was 46th in Division I in triples with four. He led the Dirtbags in runs scored (45) and at-bats (207). His 39 walks tied for the team lead with John Newman Jr., and they were fifth in the conference. Ashworth hit .275 with four home runs and 27 RBI.
Center fielder Alex Champagne led the Big West in stolen bases with 19 (in 25 attempts). He was the only Dirtbags player to appear, started all 55 games, and played every inning (495.2) for Long Beach State. He hit .244 with two home runs, 18 RBI, and 31 runs scored (the fourth most on the team).
Landon Greenhouse's strong Fall has allowed the sophomore to start for the Dirtbags. He appeared in eight games as a freshman last season, scoring one run and stealing one base.
We preview the Northwestern series on Thursday and look at the 2025 schedule.
