The Beach had three in double-figures but lose on the road to the Bulldogs.
FRESNO, Calif. – Long Beach State had another strong start defensively, but the Bulldogs eventually got hot in the second half and pulled away in an 82-62 win for Fresno State.
Long Beach State (0-2) once again had a strong start defensively, opening up an early lead while holding Fresno State (2-1) off the board for nearly five minutes of game time to maintain a lead through the 12-minute mark of the first half.
The Bulldogs were able to respond with a run of their own, an 8-0 streak to take a five-point lead before the Beach snapped the scoreless streak with a Petar Majstorovic runner. A jumper from Gavin Sykes then tied the game at 15, but a 10-0 run from the Bulldogs, as their leading scorer Jake Heidbreder finally got on the board, led to a 28-20 halftime lead for Fresno State.
Long Beach State, who held Fresno State to just 39% shooting in the first half and 1-for-9 shooting from three, were undone by a hot streak to start the second half. The Bulldogs made four straight threes out of the break to take a 40-27 lead and would extend their lead to 20 points before the under-12 media timeout.
The Beach had a better offensive second half, shooting 50% from the field, but eight 3-pointers in the second half along with a 38-26 rebounding edge for Fresno State helped seal the victory for the Bulldogs.
Long Beach State had three players in double figures, as freshman Gavin Sykes scored a career-high 11 points while Isaiah Lewis and Rob Diaz III each finished with 10. Petar Majstorovic was the team's rebounding leader with six while adding nine points. Heidbreder led the Bulldogs with 24 points on the night.
Long Beach State will finish a three-game road swing to begin the year on Wednesday, November 16 at Pacific. That game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
