LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had 12 players play extended minutes in an 87-54 rout of Nobel as the Battle at the Beach began with the first of three games.
Long Beach State (1-4) had four players in double figures as the Beach pulled away in the second half against Nobel (1-5), who battled but ultimately were crushed on the boards 46 to 27 and had 21 turnovers on the night.
The Beach never trailed and opened the game with a strong start, finding Petar Majstorovic for three on the first basket and taking a 12-2 lead in the first eight minutes of play. A Cole Farrell bucket pushed the edge to 13 at 23-10, but Nobel made their strongest push of the night at that point, going on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to five.
Leading 31-24 at the half, Long Beach State broke the game open in the second half. Scoring 56 points after the break, Long Beach State shot 50% from both the field and from three in the second 20, opening the half on a 6-0 run and never looking back. The lead ballooned to 21 on a paint touch from freshman Leopold Levillain and eventually grew to 35 in the closing minutes.
A fun moment came late in the contest, as former Nobel player Immanuel Lewis made his Long Beach State debut. Lewis was part of that late push, playing seven minutes and hitting a 3-pointer to make the score 79-45 in the final minutes.
Majstorovic scored 12 points to lead the team, while Levillain, Gavin Sykes, and Christian Jones each had 10. Derrick Michael Xzavierro led the Beach with a season-high seven rebounds.
The victory snapped an extended losing streak dating back to last season for Long Beach State—19 games. The tournament continues tomorrow as Nobel takes on Montana State, and Long Beach State will face Montana State on Friday, November 21 at 7 p.m.
