
Harper Stewart Seals Thrilling Sudden Victory Win On Senior Night For Men’s Water Polo

Stewart, Francisco both had four goals to lead the Beach in the regular season finale.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – LMU mounted a fourth-quarter rally to force overtime against Long Beach State, but after two tight overtime periods sophomore Harper Stewart struck first in sudden death to give the Beach a 16-15 win over the Lions on Senior Night.
No. 7 Long Beach State (16-8) controlled the action after recognizing their seniors pregame, turning a 1-0 deficit No. 12 Loyola Marymount into a 4-2 lead in the first quarter as Konstantinos Kapragkos gave the Beach a 3-2 lead and Oliver Sudar snuck one in just before the end of the first.
Harper Stewart netted his first on the day to begin the scoring in the second period, though Tommaso Baldineti scored a power-play goal for LMU to keep the Lions within two at the half, 5-3.
Stewart's second goal of the game gave Long Beach State their largest lead of the contest in the third, up 8-4, and a power-play goal just before the end of the quarter from Toring Stanley kept the Beach in front 10-7 entering the fourth.
LMU scored on their first two possessions in the fourth quarter to gain some momentum, and the final game of the regular season was a battle the rest of the way. The Lions finally tied the game at 12-12 on a goal from Alika Naone, holding on to force overtime.
The Lions took their first lead since the opening goal to start the first overtime, but the Beach forced a penalty that was converted by Caleb Francisco, and then Corbin Stanley put the Beach in front 14-13. Trading sides, the Lions pulled back in front by scoring two goals, but Stewart evened the scored with a goal with 12 seconds remaining to force sudden death.
Two scoreless possessions started the final overtime period, but the Beach were able to work the ball over to Stewart on the right side and the lefty made the Lions pay, sealing the win for the Beach.
Next, Long Beach State has earned the top seed as the regular season champs for the upcoming Big West Championship, hosted November 21-23 by UC Irvine. The Beach opens the tournament at Noon on Saturday, November 22 facing the winner of the 4/5 game from Friday.
