Women’s Basketball Loses Tight Exhibition In Preseason Tuneup

11/1/2025 3:42:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Long Beach State had four in double-figures but couldn’t finish off Point Loma.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – With 12 lead changes and five ties, Long Beach State's preseason exhibition with Point Loma was a back-and-forth affair, but the Sea Lions were able to get the edge on Women's Basketball 74-71 in the final test before the regular season.

Long Beach State had four in double-figure scoring, led by new transfer Khylee Pepe who scored 16 and was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. JaQuoia Jones-Brown and Judit Oliva Fernandez each scored 14 points while true freshman Brynna Pukis added 12.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but a three-point play from Christy Reynoso towards the end of the first quarter evened the game at 10-10, and a Pepe paint touch gave the Beach a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Point Loma had their strongest quarter in the second in response however. Long Beach State pulled ahead by five with just over six minutes remaining in the half, but a 7-0 run had the Sea Lions right back in the contest, and Point Loma opened up their largest lead of the game at 34-27 before a pair of Jones-Brown free throws set the halftime score at 34-29.

Point Loma would hold that edge through the start of the third, but Long Beach State battled back to close the quarter. Pukis hit a 3-pointer to pull the score to 50-46, and back-to-back drives from Jones-Brown and Tairat Samuel-Afolabi evened the score at 52-52.

A three from Judit Oliva Fernandez would  put the Beach up four at 60-56 with just over seven minutes remaining, but the Sea Lions had one more run, going on a 9-2 spurt to take a late lead. Long Beach State continued to hold close for a thrilling final minute. Down four, Pepe scored in the paint to cut the lead to two with less than ten seconds to play, and Izzy Navarro missed a free throw setting up an opportunity for the Beach. Long Beach State was able to work to a good shot, finding Samuel-Afolabi in the corner for three, but the game-tying attempt rimmed out and Point Loma held on for the exhibition win.

Long Beach State will now begin the season on the road, taking on a two-game road trip to start the year. The Beach will open at Wyoming on Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m. before facing Colorado State on Sunday, November 9 at Noon.
