Career Night From Devin Askew Spoiled In Defeat At Cal Poly

The senior scored a career-high 35 points but Long Beach State’s rally fell short in a 78-69 loss.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Devin Askew scored a career-high 35 points, but the Beach stumbled out of the gate and couldn't complete a second-half comeback in a 78-69 defeat at Cal Poly on Saturday.

Long Beach State (7-14, 3-6 Big West) missed their first eight 3-point shots, including some strong looks that didn't fall while Cal Poly (7-14, 1-8 Big West) started out hot, starting the game on a 12-2 run and opening up a 19-6 lead in the first seven minutes.

The Beach was able to shore things up in the first half, and after an 8-0 run in the final minutes brought the edge back to single digits at nine, the Beach trailed 40-28 at halftime.

Opening the second half on a 16-9 run, Long Beach State was right back in the contest, but faced a critical challenge as the game slipped past the 10 minute mark. Askew hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 55-49 with his 21st point of the ballgame and after a stop, a breakaway basket from Varick Lewis was initially called a basket and a foul, giving the Beach a chance to cut the lead down to three with 10 minutes to play. The call was changed to on the floor, and instead the Mustangs scored the next basket, a three from Owen Koonce to put the Mustangs back on top by nine, 58-49.

The Beach would continue to push back, but each time Long Beach State made a push, Cal Poly had an answer, ultimately winning by that nine-point margin.

Askew's 35 points bettered his previous career-high of 32, set earlier this season at UC Davis. TJ Wainwright was the only other scorer for Long Beach State in double-figures however, finishing with 12 points. Cal Poly was led by Jarred Hyder who scored 19 points, leading three Mustangs that finished with 15 or more points.

The Beach will return to Long Beach next week to host league leaders UC Irvine in the Black and Blue Rivalry Thursday night before facing UC Santa Barbara on the road on Saturday, February 1.
