Hershtynovich's 20 kills paces the Beach
ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—No. 2 Long Beach State defeated No. 12 3-1 in men's volleyball action Saturday night at Neil Carey Arena.
The host Flyers opened set one on a 4-1 run and never looked back, taking the opener by a 25-20 count. The Beach led from the start of the second set, leading by as many as five before Lewis battled back, tying the score at 24 on a Shawn Baggs ace. LBSU went up 25-24 on a Flyers' attack error. A Long Beach State service error made it 25-25. Daniil Hershtynovich returned the lead to Long Beach State with a kill. The Beach took the set 27-25 when DiAeris McRaven blocked a Frederick Kreuger-Beer attack for the set-winning point.
The third set saw the teams battle to three ties, and Long Beach State went into the lead at 4-3. With Long Beach State leading anywhere from two to five points, LBSU found breathing room with a 6-1 spurt that resulted in a 20-11 lead. Long Beach State would take a 2-1 lead 25-16.
Led by Hershtynovich, who had seven kills in the fourth set, the Beach led 19-11. Lewis mounted a comeback that saw the Flyers use a 10-3 spurt to cut the lead to 22-21 on a Long Beach State unforced error. Lazar Bouchkov's kill pushed the lead back to two for LBSU. A Moni Nikolov service ace was unsuccessfully challenged by Lewis, giving Long Beach State three match points. Max Roquet's kill and a Beach attack error created a 24-23 score. Hershtynovich secured the match with a kill from Nikolov 25-23.
Hershtynovich posted a season-high 20 kills, hitting .389 for the match (20-6-36). Sotiris Siapanis hit a season-high .517, recording 16 kills (16-1-29). A freshman setter, Nikolov recorded his second consecutive double-double as he dished out 51 assists and had 16 digs. He added a season-high five service aces and four kills.
Long Beach State outhit Lewis .339 (63-20-127) to .283 (50-16-120). The Beach outdug the Flyers 50-41 and held an 18-12 advantage in blocks. Oguzhan Oguz led Lewis (4-1) with 18 kills.
LBSU (4-0) host Concordia University Irvine (4-1) Friday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 7 p.m.
