LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Track and Field has announced the hiring of Devin Elizondo, who will join the program as an Assistant Coach in charge of the distance runners as well as guiding the Cross Country programs.

"I am excited to get to work in this vibrant, diverse community with a tremendous fan base," said Elizondo. "We now compete in the premiere conference in the West Coast and we have a real opportunity to shine in this new spotlight. Long Beach State hosts some of the best track and field meets in the country at Jack Rose Track, which means our athletes get to measure themselves against the very best competition.

"I've long admired the vision, effort and commitment that has led the Beach to becoming a contender at multiple levels and proving to be a flagbearer for developing talent at a high level inside the classroom and in the sporting arena. Over the years it has become evident that pride and excellence are the hallmarks of this program and I am determined to uphold this legacy alongside Director Andy Sythe, Head Coach LaTanya Sheffield and the rest of the Long Beach State community."

Elizondo has an established record of success on the West Coast with UC Davis, UCLA and most recently, CSUN. Elizondo has spent the last three seasons working with the Matadors following a five-year stint with UCLA.

Starting his collegiate coaching career within the Big West at UC Davis, Elizondo spent three seasons as the assistant coach for cross country and track and field before taking over as the head of the cross country program in 2014. In that role, he helped the Aggies claim a Big West title and was named the 2014 Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

"Devin has a wealth of experience and success that spans over two decades, with many of those experiences came from coaching in the Big West," said head coach LaTanya Sheffield. "Coach Elizondo's body of work is impressive. He has produced NCAA All-Americans, Western Regional Qualifiers, Big West Champions ranging from the 800m to the 10K, and school record holders. He has had paramount success in building united team cultures. We look forward to him leading our distance crew, instilling his philosophy, and shaping our student-athletes' future in the sport and beyond."

Elizondo graduated from UCLA in 1998 with a degree in history. He was a member of three Pac-10 track & field championship teams and helped lead the cross country team to a pair of third-place conference finishes. Elizondo was the UCLA cross country team's Most Outstanding Freshman in 1994 and was selected first-team All-District IX in 1995.
