Villani Selected In 13th Round Of 2024 MLB Draft

The Dirtbags’ closer goes to the Dodgers
LONG BEACH, Calif.— On Tuesday afternoon, Long Beach State closer Mike Villani was selected in the 13th round of the 2024 Major League Baseball player draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Villani was the 400th player taken.
Named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List on Apr. 24 (was 1-of-59 closers named), Villani finished the regular season 12th in Division I in saves with 10. He tied for the Big West lead in the category with two others. The 6-2 senior went 1-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 22 appearances. He struck out 29 while walking 11 in 25 innings. Villani allowed 17 hits as opponents batted .185 against him.
Villani is the first LBSU player taken by the Dodgers since 2016, when Chris Mathewson was selected in the 19th round. He was the lone Dirtbags' player chosen in the 2024 draft.
