A former Big West rival at UC Irvine, Johnson will return to the Big West after playing previously at North Carolina A&T.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Austin Johnson has committed to finishing his Division I career with Long Beach State, providing more veteran leadership in the front court for Chris Acker's first squad at the Beach.
Austin Johnson
Forward, 6-9, 235
Austell, Ga. (Wheeler HS)
North Carolina A&T/UC Irvine
Austin Johnson provides great experience for Long Beach State in the front court, having competed for four seasons of Division I including the 2020-21 COVID year, and is electing to return to the NCAA for a sixth and final year with Long Beach State. In 2022-23 with North Carolina A&T, Johnson started in 25 games and averaged over 5 points and 5 rebounds per game while leading NCAT with 29 blocked shots on the year.
Before transferring to North Carolina A&T, Johnson spent three seasons with UC Irvine. Playing in every game over three seasons with UCI, Johnson led the Big West in blocked shots with 61 total in 2021-22 as a junior, averaging 6.0 rebounds per game and 5.8 points per game for the Anteaters.
Acker on Johnson:
"Austin is going to be an exciting player for fans here at the Beach to watch. He has experience in our league, he's hungry and is ready to finish his college basketball career in a memorable way. He is tough, physical and skilled, and has the ability to be an elite shot blocker. We look for him to be a huge asset for us on the defensive end. I'm so happy to have Austin join us this season."
A fifth transfer joining the program, Johnson joins Devin Askew, Ramel Lloyd Jr., TJ Wainwright and Derrick Michael Xzaverrio as players with Division I experience joining Long Beach State, Chris Acker and his staff through the transfer portal. They'll be joined by a pair of incoming high school recruits in Andrew Nagy and Kam Martin and three returners on the 2024-25 roster.
