The Beach Rally To Come Back And Defeat UC Santa Barbara On The Road, 75-69

Four Long Beach State players scored in double figures to lead the Beach to victory
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Long Beach State scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to complete the come back and defeat UC Santa Barbara, 75-69, on Thursday night at the Thunderdome.
The Beach (13-16, 8-11 Big West) were led by four double figures scorers, while the Gauchos (16-13, 10-9 Big West) were paced by Alexis Whitfield's 27-point performance.
Long Beach State was hot offensively throughout the contest, shooting 55.9 (33-59) percent from the field. LBSU opened the game shooting 42.9 (6-14) percent in the first quarter and increased their shooting in every frame.
Savannah Tucker led the LBSU quartet of double-digit scorers with 17 points, while Sydney Woodley came in behind her with 16. Patricia Chung and Davai Matthews rounded out the group with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Woodley pulled down a team-best six rebounds, while adding four assists, and three steals.
Chung, meanwhile, dished out five assists to lead the team.
The Beach wasted no time getting going. Long Beach State opened the game on an 8-0 run on four-straight layups bookended by a pair from Matthews. LBSU led throughout the first quarter and held a 13-8 edge over the Gauchos heading into the second quarter.
UC Santa Barbara found its groove in the second quarter as the Gauchos shot 70.6 (12-17) percent from the field. UCSB used a 14-2 run to jump out in front of the Beach, 33-26 with just 1:01 remaining in the first half. By halftime, the Beach trailed 35-28.
The Gauchos led by as many as 13 in the game as they led LBSU, 45-32, with 7:00 on the clock in the third quarter. The Beach chipped away at UCSB's lead and whittled it down to four (51-47) after a layup from Chung with less than one minute left in the frame, before UC Santa Barbara took a 54-59 lead into the fourth quarter.
After shooting 53.8 (7-13) percent in the second quarter and 58.8 (10-17) percent in the third, Long Beach State continued its torrid shooting in the fourth. The Beach used a 10-0 run to turn a five-point deficit into a five-point lead (67-62) with 2:09 remaining in the game. The Gauchos made it a three-point game (67-64), but the Beach pushed ahead and took the game, 75-69.
UCSB shot 48.3 (28-58) percent from the field in the game. In addition to Whitfield's 27-point performance, the Gauchos also got double figure showings from Anya Choice (11 points) and Jessica Grant (10 points).
Long Beach State will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 9 at UC Davis. First serve is set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
