LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Men's Golf team will compete at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Monday, March 18 at the Tucson Country Club. The three-round tournament will conclude on Tuesday, March 19.
"Tucson Country Club will provide a good challenge to the team this week," said Long Beach State Head Men's Golf Coach Rob Murray. "They recently completed a $4 million renovation with greens, bunkering, and have added 500 yards with new tee boxes."
The 14-team field is comprised of No. 50 Long Beach State and host No. 1 Arizona, along with Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas, Denver, George Washington, Nevada, No. 19 New Mexico, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, Utah State, Utah Valley, UTEP, and Wyoming.
The Beach are coming off of a strong showing at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate where they tied for third place out of 22 teams.
Murray will be sending a new lineup to the green this week which features Clay Seeber, Charlie Forster, Jaden Huggins, Steen Zeman, and Alejandro De Castro Piera. Competing as an individual is Jack Cantlay.
"This is the first time fielding this lineup," Murray stated. "I'm excited to see them compete."
Seeber, a senior from Newport Beach, Calif., is coming off of a fourth-place finish at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate. He shot a 69-75-66 for a 210, 6-under par to lead the Beach.
Zeman competed as an individual and turned in a 4-under par performance as he fired a 66-76-70 for 212 at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate. The junior came in 12th in the field of 124 players.
"Steen has had to work hard for this opportunity. He's handled every challenger this far. This course should fit him with his length off the tee."
In their last outing, Forster and Huggins both recorded Top 25 showings at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate. Forster carded a 69-76-68 for a 213, 3-under, while Huggins notched a 74-71-69, 214, 2-under par effort.
De Castro Piera looks to continue to build upon his previous performances this season. His best showing thus far came in the season-opener when he shot a 69-71-75 for a 215, 5-over par performance to finish in a tie for 21st.
Cantlay is looking to improve on his 3-over par showing in his last outing. Like de Castro Piera, Cantlay's best performance thus far was in the season-opener at the Ram Masters Invitational. In that tournament, the sophomore was the Beach's top finisher as he placed in a tied for second after shooting 66-69-71 for a 206, 4-under par performance.
