Four Long Beach players scored in double-figures led by JaQuoia Jones-Brown’s career-high 17-point performance

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A tough second half hampered Long Beach State as the Beach dropped a 68-67 decision to Elon on Thursday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (5-5) were led by freshman guard JaQuoia Jones-Brown's career-high 17 points, while the Phoenix (5-5) finished with three double-figure scorers in the contest.

Jones-Brown shot 50.0% from the field (5-10) and 66.7% (4-6) from long distance, sinking four threes. She also contributed five rebounds and one assist, while leading a quartet of double-figure scorers.

Also reaching double digits were Patricia Chung (16 points), Savannah Tucker (12 points), and Jada Crawshaw (11 points).

Crawshaw, along with Lovely Sonnier, led the Beach with seven boards, while Chung dished out a team-best six assists. Tucker, meanwhile, picked up three steals to lead the team, while Mykelle Richards posted a pair of blocks.

Long Beach State wasted no time getting going. Chung opened the game with a layup just five seconds in to give LBSU its first lead of the game. Chung's bucket kicked off a 7-0 run by the Beach as Elon called a timeout at 7:20, trailing 7-0. Following the break, the Phoenix were able to get on the board, but the Beach continued to control the opening frame, taking a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.

Elon mounted a come back in the second quarter opening the frame scoring seven-straight points to cut Long Beach State's lead down to two (20-18) by 8:28. The Beach countered going on a 7-0 run of their own, highlighted by three by Jones-Brown, putting LBSU back on top by nine (27-18) with 6:12 on the clock. The Phoenix went on another run to pull within two (27-25), but that was a close as they'd come in the frame. Long Beach State regained its nine-point advantage (39-30) thanks to a pullup jumper by Chung with just under a minute left on the clock, before taking a 39-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half saw the Phoenix come out shooting. Elon went on an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game, a 47-43 edge over Long Beach State at 5:48. Jones-Brown put the Beach back on top with back-to-back triples at 4:45 as LBSU took a 49-47 lead. After the Phoenix evened the score at 49-49, Tucker drained a three at 4:17 to put the Beach back on top. From there, LBSU led the remained of the frame taking a 59-55 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Beach's shooting went cold in the fourth quarter as Long Beach State shot just 13.3% from the field (2-15). While, Elon wasn't overpowering with a 27.3 field goal percentage (6-22), the Phoenix managed to string together seven-consecutive points and turn a 65-59 deficit into a 66-65 advantage with 3:49 remaining. Jones-Brown tied the game (66-66) making the first of two free throws, and Chung later sunk the second of two from the line to give the Beach a 67-66 lead with 1:26 on the clock. However, Elon's Jayda Angel made a jumper from the top of the key with just 2.5 seconds left to give the Phoenix the eventual game-winning shot as Elon edged the Beach, 68-67.

Iycez Adams led the Phoenix in scoring with 13 points, while Laila Anderson finished with 12, and Ava Leroux adding 10. Adams pulled down nine rebounds, just one shy of a double-double. Raven Preston just missed a double-double as she concluded the game with nine points and a team-leading 14 rebounds. Also recording nine points, including the eventual game winner, was Angel who chipped in eight boards.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 30 when the Beach host Bethesda at the Walter Pyramid in the final non-conference game of the year. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
