Crawshaw Hits New Career-High In Long Beach State’s Loss To No. 1 UCLA

12/14/2024 5:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Jada Crawshaw led the Beach with a career-high 19 points, while Savannah Tucker dished out a career-best six assists in the setback

LONG BEACH, Calif. – As the Walter Pyramid marked its 30th anniversary, Long Beach State women's basketball hosted top-ranked UCLA marking the first time a No. 1 ranked women's basketball team played in the iconic building. The nationally-ranked Bruins went on to defeat the Beach, 102-51, in front of a crowd of nearly 2,500.

Long Beach State (5-4) got off to a slow start, but improved with each quarter. By the fourth quarter, the Beach were matching UCLA (10-0) almost bucket for bucket. However, the Bruins' 55.7% shooting in the game was too much for the Beach to overcome as UCLA extended its winning streak to 10.

Jada Crawshaw led the Beach with a career-high 19 points as she shot 50.0% (9-18) from the field with one triple. She added two assists, one rebound, and one steal in the contest.

Senior Savannah Tucker also set a new career-high as she distributed six assists to go along with nine points, four boards, and one steal.
Rachel Loobie and JaQuoia Jones-Brown each tallied seven points, while Mykelle Richards added six.

UCLA opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. A pullup jumper from Loobie at 8:37 separated the Bruins' scoring run with another nine-consecutive points that put UCLA up 16-2 as Long Beach State called for a timeout. Following the break, Tucker completed the and-1 to cut UCLA's lead down to 11 (16-5). However, the Bruins would close the first quarter with seven-straight points to take a 28-8 lead over the Beach into the second quarter.

The Bruins continued their scoring run into the second quarter kicking off the frame with eight-consecutive points to extend their lead to 28 (36-8). However, a triple from Crawshaw put the Beach in double-figures (36-11) before Haley Wright completed the three-point play with 1:34 remaining to move the score to 46-18. The Beach got a jumper from Loobie with 29 seconds remaining to close the first half with Long Beach State down, 49-20.

Long Beach State started the second half with a three from Loobie, before UCLA went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 34 (57-23). Tucker's layup at 7:08, separated a pair of 8-0 runs by the Bruins as UCLA jumped out to a 65-25 advantage with 6:12 on the clock. Richards made both free throws, then followed with a driving layup as the Beach cut the Bruins' lead to 36 (65-29). However, UCLA used another scoring run to push its lead to 74-31 with 2:21 remaining. Following a Long Beach timeout, Tucker hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to the fourth quarter with the Beach trailing, 80-35.

Crawshaw had a breakout fourth quarter as she led the Beach with 10 points in the frame to bring her to a new career-best. With Crawshaw leading the way, Long Beach State shot 50.0% (8-16) from the field and matched UCLA nearly bucket for bucket. The Bruins outscored the Beach by just six points (22-16) in the final 10 minutes of action as UCLA shot 55.7% (10-18) in the frame as they handed LBSU a tough 102-51 setback. The win gave the Bruins' Head Coach Cori Close her 297th career victory as she became the winningest coach in UCLA Women's Basketball history.

The Bruins had five double-figure scorers and were led by Lauren Betts and Angela Dugalic who each finished with 22 points. Betts added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while also contributing three steals, three blocks, and two assists. Janiah Baker also registered a double-double as she posted 19 points and 10 boards on an impressive 90.0% (9-10) field goal percentage. Rounding out the UCLA double-figure scorers were Gabriela Jaquez (17 points) and Kiki Rice (12 points). Londynn Jones concluded the game with nine assists, while Dugalic added six.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 19 when they host Elon at the Walter Pyramid. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
