Long Beach State got off to a slow start and never recovered against the Dons.
SAN FRANICSCO, Calif. – Hot shooting from the Dons and a slow start from Long Beach State led to a long evening in San Francisco in an 84-54 defeat on the road for the Beach.
Defense on both sides carried the early minutes, as San Francisco (3-0) held Long Beach State (1-2) off of the board but the Beach was well within striking distance down 6-0 after four minutes. A pair of free throws from TJ Wainwright put the Beach on the board, but USF answered with an 8-0 run before a Cam Denson three got the Beach back on track in the first half.
A 3-pointer from Wainwright sparked a strong offensive spell for Long Beach State, capped by a layup from the junior to cut the lead to eight at 26-18 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. The Dons responded with a 7-0 run, and led 36-24 at halftime.
USF, who shot over 50% in the first half, were even better offensively in the second half, shooting 63.3 percent from the field, using that hot shooting to pull away from Long Beach State in the final 20 minutes, ultimately coming away with an 84-54 victory in San Francisco.
Devin Askew led Long Beach State with 12 points, while Wainwright added 11 points and Denson set a season-high with nine points.
Long Beach State returns home for their next contest, hosting Portland inside of the Walter Pyramid. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 16 with live coverage on ESPN+.
