Men’s Water Polo Opens Gary Troyer Tournament With Two Dominating Wins

Corbin Stanley led the offense with eight goals on the day.

CLAREMONT, Calif. – No.10 Long Beach State started their campaign at the Gary Troyer Tournament with two wins against Redlands 24-12 and Whittier by 29-10. 29 goals scored is the second-most goals scored in a single-game by Long Beach State in program history. 
 
In the first game of the day, The Beach dominated Redlands winning by 24-12 to open the weekend. Freshman Corbin Stanley had a career-high of six goals in six attempts, while Freshman Gabi Acosta added four to lead the team on the win.  
 
The Beach was able to get an early lead in the first quarter as they scored seven goals in a row. The Bulldogs would go into a three-goal run to put the game 7-3 before half. But Alec Johnson added one to put the Beach up by five at the end with a 8-3 score. Stanley scored two in the quarter as Acosta added one. Artur Diaz, Caleb Francisco, Johnson, Kostantinos Kapragkos and Itai Roth all scored in the quarter to help the Beach. 
 
Sophomore Marc Frigola got things started on the second quarter scoring his first one of the match on a penalty shot. Redlands got one on the board in the quarter as Francisco and Kapragkos scored their second goal of the game each, and Botond Hadju scored one with four seconds left in the quarter to keep the Beach ahead leading into halftime by 12-4.  
 
The second half started with the Beach scoring seven more goals and only allowing the Bulldogs to score in two opportunities. Acosta scored two quick goals to extend the lead by ten. Kapragkos added another to complete his hat-trick and Stanley added two more. Francisco and Alex Makshanoff added two more goals for the Beach to lead into the last quarter 19-6. 
 
In the last quarter the Beach controlled the match to win by 24-12. Redshirt Freshman Keegan Moore got on the board with a penalty shot to open things for the Beach. Stanley added two more to finish the game with six and Senior Nikola Jancic scored on a penalty shot on his first of the game. Acosta scored his fourth one to close the game for the Beach. 
 
On the second game of the day, the Beach defeated Whittier with a 29-10 win. Four Beach players recorded hat-tricks on the win. And in cage Liam Ward and Joe Jenness collected eight saves combined. 
 
Gabi Acosta quickly opened things for the Beach with a goal in the first offense of the game. Marc Frigola got his first of the match right after to extend the lead for the Beach. The Poets responded with a natural goal but a three-goal run by the Beach let the game 5-1. Whitter scored back-to-back goals to make the game 5-3 but two quick goals by Riley Catino and Harper Stewart put the Beach up 7-3 after the first quarter. 
 
Frigola scored another one to open the second quarter of the game. Itai Roth netted another goal for Long Beach State to extend the lead. The Beach and the Poets traded goals to let the game 10-5. Three quick goals by Catino, Caleb Francisco and Kostantinos Kapragkos turned the game 13-5 at halftime. 
 
In the second half, the Beach dominated Whittier scoring ten goals and only allowing two. Acosta scored two goals to complete his hat-trick, Bruno Chiappini scored his first of the day, Botond Hadju netted another one on the season as Stewart scored one more for the Beach. Francisco and Catino completed their hat-tricks of the day as Alec Johnson added another one to the scoresheet. Kapragkos scored his second of the day on a counterattack and the Beach finished the quarter up 23-7. 
 
In the last quarter the Beach controlled the game and extended their lead to finish the game 29-10. Gabi Acosta, Riley Catino, Caleb Francisco and Marc Frigola all recorded hat-tricks on the win. Alec Johnson, Botond Hadju, Kostantinos Kapragkos, Itai Roth, Corbin Stanley, Harper Stewart all netted two goals on the win. Jackson Bryson, Bruno Chiappini, Nicolas Fuchs, Keegan Moore and Michael Soybel completed the scoresheet for the Beach. 
 
On Saturday the Beach will close the Gary Troyer Tournament with two more games at the Haldeman Pool in Claremont, Calif. At 8 a.m. the Beach will face Wagner and at Noon No. 17 California Baptist.
