No. 8 Long Beach State Edged By No. 9 UC Irvine In Thrilling Game

Freshmen trio collects five goals as the Beach drops second Big West contest.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 8 Long Beach State dropped a close contest against No. 9 UC Irvine, 13-12 this Friday at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
The Beach (13-9, 0-2 Big West) got on the board first with sophomore Marc Frigola in the first offense of the game. UC Irvine (11-7, 2-0 Big West) got on the board with Luka Krstic scoring his first two of the game to put the Anteaters on the lead 2-1. The Beach answered quick with a goal by Riley Catino with two minutes left in the quarter. A late goal by senior Bruno Chiappini put the Beach on the lead in the first quarter 3-2.
The second quarter of the match started with UC Irvine's Ethan Shipman getting on the board to tie the game. Freshman Gabi Acosta netted one to put the Beach back in the lead, before freshman Corbin Stanley extended the lead 5-3. Krstic got on the board one more time before senior Nikola Jancic scored on an extra man situation to keep the lead for the Beach. UC Irvine closed the second quarter with a three-goal run to head into halftime up 7-6.
UC Irvine's run continued in the second half as they added two more quick goals to lead by three with six minutes left in the quarter. Senior Evan Cain scored on a penalty shot, but Irvine answered quickly with two goals make the game 11-7. Acosta and Stanley scored their second goal of the game but Krstic would net another one to lead into the last quarter with the Beach trailing 12-9.
The Beach attempted a comeback with two goals by Chiappini and freshman Artur Diaz but Krstic's seventh goal of the game would keep the Anteaters in the lead by two with under three minutes left in the game. Sophomore Caleb Francisco scored to make the game 13-12 but UC Irvine's defense stopped the Beach attempts to take the win in the Black and Blue Rivalry Game.
The Beach is back in action next Friday as they host No. 14 UC San Diego at 6 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
