Woodley Nearly Posts A Triple Double With 18,7,7

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Sydney Woodley connected a pair of free throws with 19.4 seconds remaining as Long Beach State defeated UC Riverside 54-52 in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.

Back-to-back three-point field goals from Savannah Tucker and Casey Valenti Paea keyed an 8-0 Long Beach State start. The Beach connected on their first five three-point field goal attempts as LBSU went 8-for-15 from the field in the opening 10 minutes, earning the Beach a 21-4 lead after one period of action.

The Highlanders opened the second quarter by scoring seven consecutive points to cut the Long Beach State lead to 21-11 as the Beach called timeout with just under seven minutes to play. UC Riverside extended the run to 15-0 on a Jordyn Marshall three-point play at 5:19. Tucker's three-pointer on the ensuing LBSU possession cut UCR off. The Highlanders outscored the Beach 19-5 to close the deficit to 26-23 at halftime.

Matheya Bryant scored the opening four points of the third for UC Riverside, giving the Highlanders their first lead two minutes into the period. Woodley's free throws on the next Long Beach State possession put LBSU back on top. The score would be tied at 28 for two minutes before Makayla Jackson's three-pointer returned the advantage to UCR. Jordan Webster's free throws pushed the lead to five for UCR midway through the frame. The teams battled with the Highlanders leading 41-39 as the third quarter ended.

Woodley opened the fourth quarter by stealing the UCR inbounds pass, and her layup tied the game nine seconds in. The teams held each other at bay for over two minutes until Woodley intercepted a UCR pass and led Tucker to a layup and a 43-41 lead. The Beach called a timeout to set up their press, which forced a Highlanders' turnover. LBSU took advantage as Jada Crawshaw's layup put the Beach up by four. Tucker recorded a steal, which led to a Valenti Paea drive. She was fouled. Valentia Paea connected on both free throws to increase the lead to six.

The fourth Long Beach steal of the period led to a Woodley fastbreak basket. UC Riverside called a timeout, trailing 49-41 with 5:01 to play. The Long Beach State defense forced a 30-second violation out of the break. Bryant broke the drought a little over a minute later for the Highlanders. A Webster layup off a turnover cut it to 49-45. Webster followed again with a layup for a 49-47 score at the two-minute mark.

Crawshaw's putback on an offensive rebound on the following LBSU possession put it back to a two-possession game, 51-47. At 1:24, Bryant's layup created a two-point game. A Long Beach State turnover resulted in Webster putting back her miss. She was fouled on the play and sank the free throw for the three-point play with 38 seconds remaining.

The Beach did not call timeout and worked the clock to 19 seconds when Woodley was fouled on a jumper. She made both free throws as UCR called timeout to advance the ball. Webster had two chances. She drove the lane and missed. She grabbed the rebound and missed the layup once again.

Cheyenne Givens was fouled on the rebound with 1.9 seconds remaining. She missed the first free throw attempt and made the second. The Highlanders called timeout again to advance the ball. The inbounds pass was towards Webster, who couldn't keep up with it as time expired.

Woodley scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made seven steals. Tucker tallied 10. Webster led all scorers with 19 points. Bryant charted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Long Beach State held UC Riverside to 33.3% shooting (21 of 63) while going 19 of 46 (41.7%) from the field. UCR outrebounded LBSU 37-31 and forced 25 turnovers. The Beach forced 21 turnovers, made 12 steals, and scored 24 points off Highlanders' mistakes.
