Beach Women’s Basketball Drops 74-59 Decision At UC Irvine In Black And Blue Rivalry Game

Casey Valenti-Paea led all scorers with 16 points, while Patricia Chung added nine boards in Long Beach State’s road loss

IRVINE, Calif. – Casey Valenti-Paea led all scorers on Thursday morning at the Bren Events Center, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State fell to UC Irvine, 74-59, in front of 2,294 loud and rowdy kids on "Kids Day."

The Beach (6-12, 1-7 Big West) shot 45.1 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle (33-31), but the Anteaters (12-6, 6-2 Big West) picked up 17 steals and capitalized on 26 LBSU turnovers to hand the Beach their six-straight loss.

Valenti-Paea scored 16 points in the game, with 11 of those coming in the first 10 minutes of action. She also added three steals, one rebound, and one assist, but accounted for seven of the team's turnovers.

Freshman Jada Crawshaw also recorded double figures as she finished the game with 11 points, while adding four boards, two blocks, and one steal.

Patricia Chung pulled down nine rebounds to go along with five points, four assists, and one steal.

The game begun as a back-and-forth affair. The conference foes traded points early in the opening frame. However, UC Irvine went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-13 lead over Long Beach State at 3:27. By the end of the quarter, the Anteaters held a 19-17 edge over the Beach.

The second quarter was evenly played and the Anteaters owned a three-point advantage (29-26) at the half.

UC Irvine broke the game open in the third as the Anteaters closed the frame on a 19-0 run as UCI jumped out in front of Long Beach, 56-37, heading into the fourth.

After being outscored 27-11 in the third quarter, Long Beach State battled back and tallied 22 points in the fourth quarter. After UC Irvine went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 26 (65-39) at 7:06, the Beach countered with eight-straight points of their own to make it a 65-47 game by 5:35. Despite their efforts, Long Beach State was unable to recover, and the Beach fell, 74-59, to the hosts.

The Anteaters had four double figure scores led by Nevaeh Parkinson's 13. Parkinson was one rebound shy of a double-double as she concluded the game with nine boards to go along with two blocks. Also scoring in double figures for UCI were Diaba Konate (12 points), Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba (11 points), and Shirel Nahum (10 points). Konate also added six assists and six steals to lead the Anteaters.

Long Beach State will be back home at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, January 27 when the Beach host UC Riverside at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
