Strong shooting from the Tritons lifted UC San Diego to the win.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State shot over 40% from both the field and from three, but a big night from UC San Diego star Bryce Pope and outstanding 3-point shooting from the Tritons helped keep UCSD unbeaten in league play as the Beach fell on the road Thursday night 88-74.
Marcus Tsohonis led Long Beach State (11-6, 3-2 Big West) with 18 points along with six assists in the same venue as his record-setting 46-point performance last season, while Aboubacar Traore added 16 points with a team-high seven rebounds.
UC San Diego (10-6, 4-0 Big West) stayed unbeaten in Big West play behind 57.1% shooting from three on the night, offsetting a relatively efficient offensive performance from the Beach. Pope finished with 26 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three. Francis Nwaokorie and Tyler McGhie each had four threes as well, part of 16-of-28 shooting on the night by the Tritons.
Both teams got off to a fast start, as the Tritons opened up an early 9-5 lead, but the Beach bounced back to take the lead, and pushed out a five-point lead behind a fast-break basket from Marcus Tsohonis at 22-17.
Jadon Jones returned to action for Long Beach State and helped open the biggest lead of the night for LBSU, hitting a pair of threes to put the Beach on top 38-32 with 4:32 left in the first. UC San Diego was able to pull even before halftime though and the teams went into the locker rooms square at 42-42.
In the second half, down just two at 53-51, Long Beach State slowed down just a little offensively which sparked the key stretch for the Tritons. UC San Diego went on an 8-0 run, sparking a strong offensive stretch where they hit six 3-pointers to open a 67-53 lead. Long Beach State would slow down the run there, but the damage was done and the Tritons held off the Beach the rest of the way on the way to the 88-74 win.
The road trip for Long Beach State continues when the Beach takes on UC Santa Barbara in a classic Big West matchup. Featuring the top two teams in the preseason coaches poll, the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU and tip Saturday night at 7 p.m.
