The Beach defense shines in straight-set victory over Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Long Beach State's defense was on-point Thursday night at Baxter Arena as the Beach earned a 3-0 [25-21, 25-16, 25-21] sweep over the Mavs.

The Beach (3-3) received solid defensive showings from the backrow and at the net as they out-blocked and out-dug the Mavs (0-5) 8-5 and 57-49, respectively. Additionally, Long Beach held the edge over Omaha in kills (41-32), hitting percentage (.192-.128), and aces (6-1).

Leading the defensive efforts for Long Beach State in the backrow were Zayna Meyer, Savana Chacon, and Jenna Giambi who all recorded double-digit digs. Meyer led the way with a season-high 15 digs to go along with 31 assists for a double-double. Chacon turned in her sixth-straight double-figure dig performance as she logged 12, while also leading the squad with three aces. Giambi, meanwhile, came off the bench and contributed 10 digs.

At the net, Kameron Bacon and Hanna Lesiak led the way with four blocks each, while Katie Kennedy and Meyer added two apiece.
Lesiak also contributed offensive with 12 kills, joining Abby Karich is double-figures. Karich led the Beach with 13 kills on a .290 attack percentage. Natalie Glenn chipped in eight kills on a .300 clip.



The Beach and the Mavs battled each other through a tight first set that saw eight ties and five lead changes. After a 4-1 run, Omaha took a 19-15 lead, but the Beach refused to quit. LBSU came back with three-straight kills from Karich to pull within one (19-18). Glenn's kill evened the score at 21-all and sparked a 5-0 LBSU run to win the game, 25-21, on back-to-back kills from Glenn.

The second set was all Long Beach State. The Beach opened the frame with four-straight points, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Chacon, and never looked back. LBSU led the entire set as they cruised to a 25-16 win on a kill from Karich to take a 2-0 lead over Omaha.

Long Beach State took an early lead in the third set, but Omaha would not go away quietly. Leading 2-0 sets to none and up by seven (14-7) everything looked to be going in the Beach's favor. Omaha called a timeout to regroup and chipped away at Long Beach State's lead. The Mavs used a 4-0 run to cut LBSU's lead down to five (18-13), then scored three-straight to make it a three-point game (20-17). LBSU utilized a timeout and got their groove back as Kennedy sent it to match point (24-18). UNO scored another three-straight points to test the Beach, which bounced back and put the match away on a kill from Lesiak to win, 25-21.



Omaha was led by McKenna Ruch who hit .412 in the match and tied for the team lead with eight kills, while also leading the Mavs with three blocks. Shayla McCormick also added eight kills to go along with six digs. Olivia Curry and Rachel Fairbanks split time at setter with each distributing 12 assists. Curry added 14 digs for a double-double.

Long Beach State will continue its road swing at No. 4 Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. (PT)/7 p.m. (CT). The match will be live streamed on B1G+.
