Cox had the quick answer to a Utah Valley goal in the first half.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State put nine shots on target and had 16 total in a warm day at George Allen Field, and a goal from sophomore Cherrie Cox helped the Beach tie with Utah Valley 1-1 on Sunday.
Long Beach State (4-3-1) found Cox for two early chances that were both turned away by Utah Valley (3-3-2) goalkeeper CJ Graham in the first five minutes. Graham finished with eight saves on the night to help the Wolverines hold off the Beach on a hot day in Long Beach.
In the 23rd, Morgan Houston-Shepherd was able to turn away a free kick from Utah Valley but the rebound landed at the feed of Heather Stainbrook who scored her first goal of the season to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State bounced right back with some excellent combination play from Makayla Demelo and Summer Laskey who found Cox in a great position to quickly equalize just five minutes later.
Cox, who finished with five shots including four on target had one more great chance in the 69th minute, as Kassandra Ceja won back the ball in the offensive half and quickly slipped in Cox, but her effort was just off to the side.
Zora Standifer, who played in the second half as a pre-planned substitute in goal came up with the biggest of her four saves in the 78th minute with a diving save on a shot from distance by Elle Young.
Through the final ten minutes, Demelo, Ceja and Laskey all had late shots but the Beach were unable to best Graham for a second time down the stretch.
Long Beach State looks to continue their unbeaten streak at George Allen Field next week, beginning conference play with the Black and Blue Rivalry against UC Irvine on Thursday before hosting Northern Colorado in the team's final non-conference matchup on Sunday.
