The event will be hosted by Cal Poly at their new course, the site of the 2023 Big West Championships
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Led by two standout returners, Long Beach State will open the 2023 season on the road at the Big West Preview hosted by Cal Poly.
Held on the same Blacklake Golf Course in Nipomo which will serve as the host site for the Big West Championships in October, Friday's opener will give the team a great advance look at the all-grass course for the conference's premier event.
Long Beach State returns two outstanding leaders from last year's squad, both the program record holders.
Junior Allie Scimia was the runner-up at the Big West Championships last season, the second-highest finish in program history. An All-Big West pick, Scimia recorded the first sub-20 6K time at the Beach with a 19:45.3 time at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyside a year ago, and is primed for a big season in 2023.
On the men's side, Michael Phillips returns for his senior season at the Beach. Another program record holder, Phillips set the 8K record of 23:32.5 also at the Bronco Invitational, besting a 11-year old record in the process.
Depth for Long Beach State on the men's side will come from a pair of newcomers in Kyle Reden and Cameron Rhone among others, while a wide-open group will join Scimia in racing for the women's side.
The Big West Preview should be an exciting event to kick off the season. Seven of the eight men's programs and the ten women's programs in the conference will be taking the opportunity to race the course on the weekend, while the San Diego State women's program will be among the 10 teams scheduled to take the start on Friday.
