Former Long Beach State Football Head Coach, Dave Currey, Passes Away

Currey had the second longest tenure leading the LBSU football program in the program’s 36 years.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Dave Currey passed away this past weekend at the age of 80. The former Long Beach State football head coach had the second longest tenure of the program's 36 years and recorded the second most wins of all the former coaches.
Currey was the Director of Athletics at Chapman University for 25 years, retiring in 2015. Prior to joining Chapman, he enjoyed an extensive career in college football at Stanford, Long Beach State, Cincinnati, and UCLA.
Taking over the reins of Long Beach State's football program prior to the 1977 season, he totaled 40 wins and a .526 winning percentage in his seven years which included a Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championship in 1980. The 1980 and 1983 seasons were two of just nine years, the program won eight or more games.
Currey is survived by his wife of 18 years, Elaine, and his son, John-David, who has two children, Jenna and Ben, with his wife Michelle, and his daughter Tracey Riness, who has three children, Owen, Phoebe, and Piper, with her husband Clayton.
