LONG BEACH, Calif. – The battery mates of Nico Zeglin and Connor Burns have earned Associated Baseball Coaches of America All-West Region honors. The ABCA office announced the recipients Tuesday morning.
Already an All-American from Collegiate Baseball, Zeglin was a First Team selection by the ABCA. The right-hander was dominant in his one and only season with the Dirtbags, leading the Big West with 94.2 innings and 117 strikeouts while ranking second with a 2.00 ERA and .202 opponent batting average. Totaling 15 starts, he only surrendered more than three earned runs once posting 10 quality starts.
Statistically at the end of the season, he ranked seventh in the nation in both strikeouts and ERA while also ranking 12th in WHIP (0.99) and 26th in hits allowed per nine (6.37).
The back-to-back Big West Defensive Player of the Year, Burns enjoyed a career year on his way to an All-West Region Second Team selection. The junior backstop slashed .307/.374/.608 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI on the year. He ranked top two on the team in average, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, and slugging percentage. Starting all 55 games behind the plate this season, he posted a .992 fielding percentage while throwing out 15 of 32 base stealers.
The Buster Posey Award semifinalist adds another accolade to his shelf, becoming the first Dirtbag position player to earn all-region honors since 2017.
With Zeglin's and Burns' selections, the Dirtbags have had four All-West Region selections in the last three years.
