Briggs wins the award for the second-straight season
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Off the Block announced Long Beach State's Mason Briggs as the 2023 Erik Shoji Award winner. It is the second-straight season the junior libero has taken home the honors.
The Erik Shoji Award is named after the former Stanford All-American and U.S. Olympian libero and is presented to the nation's best libero in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball during the regular season per a nationwide voting committee.
Briggs earned the honors after leading The Big West and ranking fifth in the nation with 2.38 digs per set, while logging double-figure digs on 11 separate occasions. With 453 service receptions, the product out of Valencia, Calif., boasted a 94.8 percent successful passing rating. A two-time AVCA First Team All-American, Briggs recorded a season-high 18 digs at No. 15 CSUN on April 7 and was a key component to holding opponents to a .204 attack percentage in the regular season, which led The Big West and ranked eighth in the nation.
The voting committee for the Erik Shoji Award was comprised of more than 30 college men's volleyball head coaches and volleyball reporters around the nation.
Briggs received 67 votes – more than the combined votes total of the other two finalists. Penn State libero Ryan Merk finished in second place with 25 votes, while Hawaii libero Brett Sheward placed third with 24 votes.
