The Beach took the time to recognize graduates, community leaders and others in the annual event.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In an annual tradition, Long Beach State student-athletes and the athletic department took the time to honor their peers with the Black and Gold dinner, a gala event held in the spring each year.
Led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Black and Gold kicked off with individual superlatives for the year, with each team presenting nominees for the following awards: Beach Spirit, Hype Person, Team Clown, Team Parent, and Newcomer of the Year.
Final tallies were announced for the Bruce DD Mac Rae Community Service Award, given annually to the team who collectively is the most active in the community. Softball was this year's winner, with Beach Volleyball coming in second place.
The Beach Volleyball team wasn't shut out though as the team with the top Spring GPA, while Women's Basketball and Women's Tennis were co-winners of the Top Fall GPA from the 2022 academic year.
Awards voted on by the student-athletes themselves were also presented. Mark Zakhour from
Beach Building Services was the winner of the Beach Pride Award, Dr. Jessika Smith of Sport Performance was presented the Cindy Masner Staff Excellence Award, and Malia Talabou and Bryce Kvick were the co-recipients of the Pyramid Leadership award.
Finally, all of Long Beach State Athletics' graduating seniors were individually recognized. 75 student-athletes will complete their undergraduate degrees in May or this coming Fall semester.
