Long Beach State will be represented by four players in the big leagues to start the 2023 season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Major League Baseball's Opening Day is here and four Dirtbags alumni are featured on big league rosters to start the season.
Evan Longoria is now the longest tenured active Dirtbag in the show as he enters his 16th season in Major League Baseball. This year, he will sport a new uniform after signing a free agent contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks this past winter. The third baseman is approaching 2000 career games played and is 19 home runs away from 350 for his career.
Matt Duffy will also be dawning some new colors after signing a deal to play for the Kansas City Royals this year. This will be his eighth season in the big leagues with his fifth different team. A World Series champion, the veteran will help lead a young and upcoming Royals team in the AL Central.
Jeff McNeil will play his sixth big league season in New York this year. The 2022 major league batting champion will also be playing the first year on his new four-year, $50 million deal with the Mets. A season that saw him set new career-highs in hits and doubles, the utility man was the starting second baseman for the National League in the All-Star Game. He is expected to be a key piece in the Mets' lineup as the favorites in the NL East.
Additionally, three Long Beach alum will be working as coaches and staff in the big leagues again this year. Brandon Hyde enters his fifth season as the Baltimore Orioles' Manager and coming off a season that earned him The Sporting News AL Manager of the Year. Eric Martins returns to the Oakland Athletics' coaching staff where he serves as the Third Base Coach. Yosuke Nakajima is also back in Los Angeles as the Assistant Athletic Trainer with the Dodgers.
