HONOLULU –
It was another wild ride at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center, but on Saturday night, No. 4 Long Beach State came up on the wrong end of a 3-0 [16-25, 23-25, 23-25] decision to No. 1 Hawaii.

The Beach (12-3, 3-1 Big West) saw their six-match winning streak snapped as the Bows (18-2, 1-1 Big West) won the serve and pass battle. Hawaii also out-blocked Long Beach State, 11.0 to 2.0, while outhitting LBSU .385 to .247.

Redshirt senior outside hitter Spencer Olivier led all scorers with 14 kills on a .417 attack percentage. He also added eight digs and one ace. Also recording double-figurers for the Beach was junior opposite Clarke Godbold who posted 11 kills on .348 hitting, while also contributing eight digs, two aces, and a block assist.

Setter Aidan Knipe paced the Beach offense with 27 assists, while also registering three digs on the night.

Hawaii opened the game on a hot streak as they hit .625 with 15 kills on 24 errorless swings. The Bows took an early lead and never trailed as they rolled to a 25-16 lead to take the first set.

Long Beach State battled back and turned in a gritty performance in the second set. The Beach and the Bows fought each other through nine ties and a pair of lead changes. Godbold led LBSU in the frame as he tallied five kills and hit .333, meanwhile Olivier chipped in four kills on a .500 clip.

Godbold served up back-to-back aces to cap a 3-0 run that brought Long Beach State within three points (23-20) of Hawaii. The Bows took it to set point, 24-20, however, the Beach would not back down. LBSU scored another three-straight points forcing a timeout by Hawaii as Long Beach was down by just one (24-23).

Coming out of the timeout, Sotiris Siapanis knocked down a kill to even the score at 24-all, however, Hawaii challenged the point. After several minutes of reviewing the video, the referees overturned the decision, calling a net violation on Siapanis which gave Hawaii the controversial set win, 25-23.

Trailing two sets to none, Long Beach State displayed its best performance in the third set hitting .303 and recording 15 kills. The Beach held a one-point advantage (15-14) at the media timeout. However, the Bows came out of the break and took a 17-15 lead as LBSU called a timeout. The Beach fought back and regained the lead, 18-17, on back-to-back kills Siapanis. The conference rivals continued to exchanged points until they were knotted at 22-all.
