LONG BEACH, Calif. – After eight straight games away from home, Long Beach State returned to the Walter Pyramid and controlled the action on the night, leading for nearly 30 minutes on the way to an 83-73 win over Sacramento State in the home opener for the Beach.
Junior Jadon Jones scored 24 points and finished with six rebounds, while Lassina Traore scored 18 points with 11 rebounds in his fifth double-double of the season for Long Beach State (5-4). Isa Silva had nine points with six assists and Aboubacar Traore came off the bench for Long Beach State and added eight point, eight rebounds and six assists for the Beach, who managed well despite missing leading scorer Marcus Tsohonis, who was out with a minor injury.
Sacramento State (2-5) grabbed an early lead behind a pair of quick 3-pointers, their largest edge of the night at 11-5. Isa Silva stopped the run for the Hornets with a basket, and Long Beach State quickly recovered, tying the game on the first of three 3-pointers from Jones at 14-14. Up two at 24-22, a 17-6 run for the Beach would set the team up for success, but the Hornets would recover just before the half, training by four at 43-39.
The Hornets stuck around, and even took their first and only lead of the half at 60-59, but Long Beach State responded with a 7-1 run to reassert their lead that would never drop below three during the rest of the contest. Up four with just under three minutes to play, a final Jones 3-pointer helped seal the win along with a basket from Amari Stroud to open a 79-70 lead.
Ultimately, it was a strong night offensively for the Beach who shared the ball smartly, finishing with a season-high 23 assists while making just eight turnovers. The Beach also outscored the Hornets in the paint 46-28 on the night.
The Beach will remain at home next week, hosting Life Pacific on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid before another great opportunity on Saturday, taking on USC in the Galen Center.
