Casey Valenti Paea Scores 20 In Tough Loss To Pacific

Long Beach State had five double-figure scores led by Valenti Paea’s career-high performance in a loss to Pacific on the final day of the Beach Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Casey Valenti Paea went off for a career-high 20 points leading five Long Beach State players in double-figures on the final day of the Beach Classic. However, LBSU came up on the wrong end of a 90-86 setback to Pacific on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (4-4) started off strong shooting 60 percent from the field (9-15) in the first quarter. However, the Tigers (7-4) had a came to life in the second half capitalizing on 22 turnovers by LBSU. In the game, Pacific scored 60 points in the paint, 48 of which came in the second half. The Tigers finished the contest shooting 50 percent (35-70) from the floor.

Valenti Paea led the Beach with 20 points as she connected on 8-of-14 field goals and made 3-of-5 three-pointers. She also added six boards, three assists, two steals, and a block, without committing any turnovers.



Long Beach's second-leading scorer on the night was Cheyenne Givens who tallied 18 points, while Patricia Chung and Sydney Woodley each contributed 13. Savannah Tucker rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points.



Woodley led the team with seven rebounds, while also adding five assists, and two steals. She and Chung tied for the team lead with five assists, while Chung also chipped in five boards and one steal.

Pacific opened the game with a quick 6-0 lead. Long Beach State got a layup from Davai Matthews at 4:33 to even the score at 11-all just before the media timeout. Givens gave the Beach their first lead of the game (16-15) after picking up a steal and going cross-court for the layup with 1:49 remaining. Valenti Paea put the Beach on top by three (22-19) after sinking the and-1 with 44 seconds left in the frame before taking a 22-21 lead into the second quarter.

The Beach used a 10-0 run capped by a jumper in the paint from Valenti Paea to jump out in front of the Tigers, 39-32, with 3:55 on the clock. Long Beach State held the lead the rest of the frame as the Beach held a 47-39 lead over Pacific at halftime.

Long Beach State opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run highlighted by back-to-back threes from Valenti Paea and Tucker as the Beach opened up a 16-point (55-39) advantage. Pacific would chip away at Long Beach's lead, and after scoring eight-consecutive points of their own, the Tigers whittled the Beach's lead back down to eight (55-47) at 6:33. The Tigers went on another run, this time scoring seven-straight to cut LBSU's lead down to five (63-58) with 1:43 left in the frame. By the end of the third quarter, the Beach held a 69-63 lead over the Tigers.

Pacific kicked off the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run as they took a 72-71 lead over Long Beach State forcing the Beach to call a timeout at 7:31. The game that once saw the Beach lead by as many as 16, was now a nailbiter as the two teams traded points until they found themselves deadlocked at 80-80 after a layup by Chung at 3:49. The Tigers jumped back on top for the final time after a layup from Cecilia Holmburg made it 82-80 with 3:34 remaining. Long Beach State got a three from Chung with 6.4 seconds left in regulation to bring the Beach within two (88-86), but Pacific would hold on to win, 90-86.

Elizabeth Elliott led Pacific with 25 points, while Holmberg finished with 18 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Liz Smith (16 points) and Anaya James (13 points) rounded out the Tigers' double-digit scorers. James also dished out five assists, while Elliott passed out four. Katie Deaton collected five steals to lead the team, while also adding nine points, five boards, and three assists.

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, Dec. 19 when the Beach hosts San Francisco at 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
