Patricia Chung sinks the game-winning free throw and leads the way with a career-high 10 rebounds

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State erased a 16-point deficit behind four career-highs to defeat Colorado State, 77-76, on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (4-3) handed the previously undefeated Rams (8-1) their first loss of the season, while earning their first win over Colorado State in program history. It was not an easy feat as Long Beach State trailed by as many as 16 points in the first quarter. But the Beach chipped away in the next three quarters before Patricia Chung sunk the game-winning free throw with 8.8 seconds remaining.

Chung was one of four LBSU players to record a new career-high for herself in the game. The junior guard finished the game with a team- and personal-best 10 rebounds, while also adding eight points and one assist.

Offensively, Sydney Woodley and Cheyenne Givens led the way with 19 points each, which was a career-high for the duo. Woodley also tied her career-high with seven steals, while adding four boards, and two assists. Meanwhile, Givens contributed three assists, two steals, and two rebounds in the game.

Rounding out the career-high crew was Casey Valenti Paea who recorded 15 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

The game began as a close one. Long Beach State and Colorado State traded points early on. However, the Rams would use an 11-0 run to take a 23-10 lead over the Beach forcing an LBSU timeout at 4:39. CSU shot 66.7 percent from the field (12-18) in the first quarter and held a comfortable 33-18 lead over the Beach by the end of the frame.

Despite falling behind early, Long Beach State refused to quit. The gritty Beach went on a 10-0 run of their own to get back into the game as the hosts trailed by just six (38-32) with 2:51 remaining after back-to-back threes from Jada Crawshaw and Givens. LBSU wasn't done yet. The Beach closed the first half on a 7-0 as the Rams took a three-point lead (46-43) into the locker room.

Long Beach State came out of halftime ready to go. The Beach wasted no time evening the score at 46-all after Valenti Paea hit a three 14 seconds into the third quarter. The triple kicked off six-straight points from LBSU as the Beach took a 49-46 lead after a steal and layup from Woodley at 8:45. Colorado State battled back and tied the game at 61-61 by 2:05, and the game remained knotted (63-63) by the end of the quarter.

The battle all came down to the final 10 minutes of action. Both teams fought each other back-and-forth until the final two minutes of regulation. Woodley grabbed another steal and ran it back for a layup at 1:50, tying the game at 74-all. Valenti Paea sunk two free throws to put LBSU up 76-74 with just 38.2 seconds left. However, McKenna Hofschild went to the line and made both of her free throws to tie the game at 76-76 with 32.1 seconds remaining. With just 8.8 seconds left on the clock, Chung was fouled. She went to the line and hit the backend of a pair of free throws to give Long Beach State a one-point (77-76) edge. Chung's free throw would prove to be the game-winner as the Rams drove it to the basket and attempted two layups before the clock expired.

Long Beach State finished the game shooting 40.6 percent from the field (28-69). The Beach led the Rams in rebounding (46-32), assists (14-13), steals (11-2).

Hofschild led all scorers with 28 points, while adding six assists, two rebounds, and one steal. Kendyll Kinzer led Colorado State with seven rebounds to go along with nine points, two assists, and one block. Hannah Ronsiek also recorded double-figures for the Rams as she finished the game with 14 points, five rebounds, one steal, and one block.

Long Beach State will host Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
