
Zayna Meyer Named Big West Setter Of The Year, LBSU Lands Five On All-Conference Team

Zayna Meyer becomes Long Beach State’s first Big West major award winner since 2014

IRVINE, Calif. – The Big West announced the 2023 All-Conference awards on Tuesday afternoon and Long Beach State's Zayna Meyer was named Big West Setter of the Year. Meyer headlines a total of five Beach All-Conference award winners as Meyer, along with middle blocker Katie Kennedy, garnered First Team honors, while Elise Agi and Natalie Glenn earned Second Team accolades, and Kameron Bacon was an Honorable Mention selection.
Meyer, a redshirt sophomore, was named Big West Setter of the Year and First Team All-Conference after averaging 10.13 assists per set to lead Long Beach State to a league-leading .249 attack percentage. The Wheaton, Ill., native has been solid on all sides of the ball logging 2.47 digs per set, while knocking down 0.91 kills per ser on a .322 clip, and adding 0.51 blocks per set. Additionally, she has served up 30 aces on the year. Meyer leads the Beach with 12 double-doubles on the year, and has led the team in digs on five occasions, while leading the squad in blocks four times.
The lone underclassman to earn First Team accolades, Meyer is also the first Long Beach State player to win a major award since 2014 when the Beach swept the category as Jenelle Hudson took home Player of the Year, Ashley Murray garnered Freshman of the Year, and Brian Gimmillaro was named Coach of the Year. The Big West added Setter of the Year and Libero of the Year to the major award list in 2022.
Joining Meyer on The Big West First Team is graduate student Kennedy, who earned the honor for the second time in her career. Kennedy has now racked up six Big West All-Conference accolades between both her collegiate indoor and beach career.
The product out of Hood River, Ore., has been a versatile asset to the Beach throughout her career. Having played outside hitter, opposite, before transitioning to middle blocker this year, Kennedy has not missed a beat. She is second on the team with 2.39 kills per set, while hitting an efficient .352 to lead the Beach and rank second in The Big West. Additionally, Kennedy averages 0.83 blocks per set for the squad to contribute on both sides of the ball. She has led the Beach in kills six times this season, while leading the team in blocks seven times. Going into The Big West Championship, Kennedy has recorded double-figure kills on 11 separate occasions.
Agi, a junior outside hitter who leads Long Beach State and is fourth in The Big West in kills per set (3.59), was named to The Big West Second Team. Agi has been hot offensively all year as she has led the Beach in kills 17 times, while recording two 20-plus kill performances and 18 double-digit kill showings. She has recorded nine double-doubles this season as she averages 2.21 digs per set, to go along with 0.32 blocks per set. She is second on the team in aces per set, with 0.41, which ranks her second in The Big West.
Glenn was also named to The Big West All-Second Team along with Agi. The junior outside hitter from Southlake, Texas is the team and conference leader in aces per set with 0.48 to help the Beach to a league-leading 1.79 aces per set average. Additionally, Glenn contributes 2.72 kills per set on a .294 attack percentage, to go along with 1.49 digs per set, and 0.61 blocks per set.
Rounding out Long Beach State's All-Conference selections is Bacon, a junior middle blocker from Fontana, Calif. Bacon leads the Beach with 1.14 blocks per set which ranks her third in The Big West. Bacon also adds 1.60 kills per set on a .302 attack percentage to come in sixth in the league.
Long Beach State leads The Big West with the most All-Conference selections among current members with 142. The Beach boasts 96 total First Team award winners, 22 Second Team honorees, and 24 Honorable Mention selections.
The Beach will begin postseason action on Wednesday, November 22 as they head into The Big West Championship as the No. 4 seed and face No. 5 seed UC Irvine at 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
