Slow Start, Offensive Woes Hurt Long Beach State In Loss To Illinois State

Long Beach State falls 61-52 in the opening game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.

ESTERO, Fla. – Long Beach State shot 35 percent from the field and ended with just five free throws attempted in a 61-52 defeat to Illinois State in the opening game of the Gulf Coast showcase.
 
                Tied 5-5 after the opening minutes, Illinois State (3-1) went on a 10-0 run as Long Beach State (2-3) went scoreless for nearly four minutes. Turning to the bench, both Messiah Thompson and AJ George closed the first half with six points, but the Redbirds held onto a 32-24 edge after the first twenty minutes.
 
                Illinois State began the second half with another big run, though Long Beach State continued to battle back through the second half. The Beach trimmed a 17-point deficit back to five at 43-38 after a 14-2 run with an Aboubacar Traore transition basket, but the Beach ultimately were unable to pull any closer than five during the remainder of the contest.
 
                The Beach held Illinois State to 35.1 percent shooting, but shot just 35.4% themselves and were hampered by 21 turnovers on the night. Thompson finished off the day as the team's leading scorer with 10 points, while Lassina Traore had 15 rebounds with eight points.
               
                After Monday's defeat, Long Beach State will face Iona in the morning session tomorrow morning, with tipoff scheduled for 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT with live coverage through FloHoops.
