LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Long Beach Grit is often talked about and on Saturday night, the Beach showed their grit, determination, and resilience. Withtheir match against Lindenwood was relocated hours before first serve due to weather, the No. 3 LBSU men's volleyball team didn't miss a beat as they downed Lindenwood in a three-set sweep [25-17, 25-21, 25-17] at the historic Gold Mine on the campus of Long Beach State.

Despite the location change, more than 1,000 dedicated Beach fans battled the rain and packed the Gold Mine in support of the Beach (2-0) as they turned in a solid showing against a scrappy Lindenwood (1-4) team.

LBSU posted 14.0 total team blocks as they were led by redshirt senior middle blocker Shane Holdaway who tied his career-high with seven blocks, while redshirt senior outside hitter Spencer Olivier added six, and junior outside hitter Clarke Godbold contributed five.

In addition to his six blocks at the net, Olivier led the Beach in scoring with eight kills as he hit .286 in the contest. Olivier was solid on both sides of the ball as he collected 16 errorless receptions with another excellent passing game from the Tustin, Calif., native.

Redshirt junior setter Aidan Knipe paced the offense to a .267 attack percentage with 24 assists to go along with seven digs. Knipe distributed the ball well as Godbold added seven kills, while sophomore outside hitter Sotiris Siapanis logged six, and junior opposite Simon Torwie registered five while hitting .625 (5-0-8) and adding four blocks.

Siapanis and Godbold were magnificent from the service line as they both set new career-highs. Siapanis led the way with five aces, while Godbold served up four. Torwie added one to bring the Beach total to 10.

Junior libero Mason Briggs shined in the back row for the Beach as he led the team with 13 digs as his stout defense kept the Lions off balance as they hit just .160 on the night.

The Beach used several small scoring runs in the first set to take a 13-11 edge over the Lions. But an 8-1 Long Beach State run broke the game open and sent it to set point, 24-16. The Beach would go on to win by a score of 25-17.

The second set saw LBSU string together three different 3-0 runs as they took a 21-16 advantage. Lindenwood would not go quietly, however, as the Lions strung together three-straight points of their own to make it a two-point game (21-19). But the Beach were unfazed as they put the game away, 25-21.

The third set went back and forth early, but a solid serving run from Torwie gave the Beach a 14-10 lead as Lindenwood called a timeout. The Lions managed to pull within one (16-15) forcing an LBSU timeout. Long Beach came out of the break reenergized and promptly got the sideout on a kill from Holdaway. With a 20-17 advantage, LBSU would close out the set and match with a 6-0 run as Siapanis gave the Beach with victory with an ace.

Lindenwood was led by Ian Schuller's 13 kills, while Connor Sheehan posted 29 assists, and Kyle Deutschmann logged 11 digs.

Long Beach State will travel to Fairfax, Va., to face Long Island and host George Mason in the East/West Coast Challenge. The Beach will play LIU on Friday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. (PST), before taking on the Patriots on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. (PST).

Notes: The match marked the first time since March 18, 2017 that the LBSU men's volleyball program played an official match in the Gold Mine. In 2017, the Beach swept Sacred Heart by scores of 25-15, 25-11, 25-13.
