LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State received their first Big West weekly honors of the season this week as Lena Silano was named Offensive Player of the Week while Cherrie Cox earned Freshman of the Week honors.
Silano had a tremendous pair of matches scoring three times on the week. Her first was a penalty kick goal in the 17th minute against Fresno State that would go down as the game-winner.
The senior followed with her first two-score performance of the season, netting both LBSU goals against San Diego. The first came in the 25th minute on an assist from Cox to finish with the left and put the Beach out front. The second was an unbelievable bicycle goal that tied the match up 2-2 in the 88th minute.
This is Silano's second career Big West weekly award and she now owns a Big West leading five goals and 11 points for the season.
A highly touted prospect, Cox has excelled in the Beach starting lineup to begin her career. This week she totaled three points, including her first collegiate goal in the 4-0 win over Fresno State. The Torrance native capped off her week with an assist to Silano in the 25th minute against San Diego.
She is now tied for third on the Beach in total points and sits just outside the top ten in the conference leaderboards.
Cox becomes the first Long Beach State student-athlete to garner Freshman of the Week honors since the award's inception ahead of the 2020 season.
