Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Big West Weekly Awards

Morgan Chacon was named Big West Player of the Week, while Dylan Dela Cruz earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Zayna Meyer was selected both Freshman and Setter of the Week
IRVINE, Calif. – The Big West Conference announced the weekly award winners and Long Beach State swept all four honors as Morgan Chacon was named Big West Player of the Week, while Dylan Dela Cruz earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Zayna Meyer was selected both Freshman and Setter of the Week.
Chacon was named Big West Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career after having a career weekend at the Portland State Tournament. The redshirt junior outside hitter made the most of her Long Beach State debut as she led the Beach averaging 4.21 kills per set, 2.21 digs per set, 4.71 points per set, and hit .259. She recorded two double-doubles in three matches with 17 kills and 10 digs against Oregon, and 16 kills and 13 digs at Portland State. She wrapped up the tournament with a career-high 26 kills while hitting .318 against No. 19 Oregon.
Dela Cruz, a senior libero, earned her first-ever Big West Conference weekly award after leading LBSU in the backrow averaging 4.43 digs per set. She opened the weekend with a career-high 24 digs against Oregon State, followed by a 20-dig showing at Portland State. In the final match of the weekend, Dela Cruz logged 18 digs against No. 19 Oregon as she helped the Beach limit their opponents to just .195 hitting on the week.
Meyer, a redshirt freshman setter, made her collegiate debut and helped Long Beach State to a 2-1 week at the Portland State Tournament after distributing 9.71 assists per set to go along with three double-doubles in as many matches. Meyer kicked off the weekend with 42 assists and a career-high 18 digs against Oregon State, then posted 44 assists and 15 digs at Portland State. Meyer closed the tournament with a career-best 50 assists and 14 digs in a five-set loss versus No. 19 Oregon. The total tally of 136 assists leads the Big West and ranks sixth in NCAA Division I after the first weekend of action.
