Highlighted by a no-hitter in a dominant month for Juaron Watts-Brown, earning him NCBWA Pitcher of the Month honors.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Headlined by a no-hitter in a dominant month of May, Juaron Watts-Brown has been named the Pitcher of the Month by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The news was announced Thursday afternoon.
The redshirt freshman made five starts in the final month of the season, sporting a 3-0 record in those games. In 33 innings, he posted a 1.64 ERA while opposing batters hit just .147 against him. He also totaled 55 strikeouts, good for a 15.0 K/9, and issued just nine walks in the entire month.
Of his five starts in the month, he recorded four quality starts and reached double-digit strikeouts in four of the five games.
The most notable of the outings was his 16-strikeout no-hitter against UC Riverside for the Hanford native. It was just the second no-no in program history and first of the complete game variety. The 16 Ks was just one shy of the single-game program record set by Jered Weaver in 2004. The performance earned him national honors by Collegiate Baseball D1Baseball, NCBWA, Perfect Game, and the Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame.
Watts-Brown ended his season with 111 strikeouts becoming the first Dirtbag pitcher to reach the century mark since the 2018 season. He was also named an All-Big West Honorable Mention earlier today.
