The Olympic Gold Medalist brings a wealth of experience to Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Head Women's Volleyball Coach Tyler Hildebrand announced the promotion of Kim Hill to assistant coach as she moves into that role after serving a volunteer.
"We are very happy to announce Kim will be joining us full-time," said Hildebrand. "She has been crushing it as our volunteer and going above and beyond for the girls and our program.
"Her volleyball credentials speak for themselves, but the thing our players and I are so excited about is what a great role model and mentor she is. She has done everything our players will want to do in this game, and that brings a value to our program that you can't quantify. The players love her and so do we. Long Beach State is a very special place to play right now, where our players get the opportunity to learn from both CJ (assistant coach Cursty Le Roux) and Kim. What a great opportunity for young women to learn this game and learn how to be great people. We feel very fortunate to able to give that opportunity of growth to everyone who comes to play for us."
Hill came to the Beach after winning the gold with Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She brought with her an impressive resume, which boasts taking gold at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Final Round in 2021, winning silver at the 2019 FIVB World Cup and 2019 NORCECA Continental Championship, as well as winning the 2018 FIVB World Championship. She also earned gold at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Final Round in 2018 after having helped Team USA take the Bronze Medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.
She won a gold medal at the 2014 World Championship with the USA Women's National Team that defeated China, 3-1. Hill was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Second Best Outside Spiker. She went on to win the 2016 World Grand Prix Best Outside Hitter individual award as well as the silver medal.
"I am incredibly excited about this new position," Hill said. "Working as the volunteer assistant this spring allowed me to see what Tyler is building here at Long Beach, and it is something special that I want to be a part of. We have a team full of incredible women and a great staff, and I am looking forward to sharing my experience as well as learning from them."
As part of the VakiBank Istanbul, Hill helped the team win the 2016-17 CEV Champions League gold medal as the squad defeated the Italian Imoco Volley Conegliano, 3-as she was awarded Best Outside Spiker. She went on to play in the Italian League All-Star Game in 2017.
A member of the USA Women's Volleyball National Team from 2013-21, Hill has also had an exceptional professional career playing overseas in Poland, Italy, and Turkey since 2013.
In addition to all of her professional and Olympic experience, Hill was also an AVCA All-American at Pepperdine. She was the first college volleyball player to earn First Team All-American honors in both indoor and beach as she earned the accolades in 2011 with the indoor squad, and in 2012 and 2013 with the beach team.
The 2011 West Coast Player of the Year, Hill excelled both on the court and off as she was named the WCC's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was also a member of the inaugural AVCA Beach Volleyball National Champions 2012.
With her experience at every level of the game, she has already been an asset to Long Beach State during the spring season.
"Coach Kim Hill receiving the secured spot is huge news for us," said senior setter Tia Chavira. "Over the spring, she helped us find ways to be vulnerable and really grow together to build a foundation. She reassured us that what we were feeling about some challenges at times was normal, that the Olympic team and players had similar experiences. Her help and input created so much growth for the team both on and off the court. The team loves her and we are so excited to continue to learn from such an amazing player and coach."
