LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Tyler Schafer was one of 45 individuals chosen to compete alongside the qualifying teams for the 2022 NCAA Regionals for Men's Golf.
Schafer will be headed to one of three 14-team regional sites, where he and four other individuals will compete. Schafer was placed as the No. 3 seed for the Stockton Regional, which will be contested at The Reserve at Spanos Park and co-hosted by Pacific and Visit Stockton.
Schaefer is the fourth individual golfer from Long Beach State to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, and is aiming to become the fifth separate golfer from the Beach to compete at the NCAA Championships, joining Mike Krantz, Mike Reehl, Mark O'Meara, and Philip Chian.
A senior, Schaefer was the low finisher for Long Beach State in four tournaments this season, and finished in the top 10 on four occasions, including two of the final three tournaments of the year. He tied for eighth place at 6-under par at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii and then finished in the Top 5 at the Desert Intercollegiate, again finishing 6-under par at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
Schafer then finished tied for seventh with his low three-round score of the year at the Cowboy Classic, shooting 10-under par to finish in the Top 10 in a 128 player field. He then followed that up with another Top 10 finish at the El Macero Classic, shooting 4-under par in a tie for seventh place overall.
He'll be joined in Stockton by individuals Caden Fioroni from UNLV, Jackson Rivera from USC, Nothan Cogswell from Seattle and Nate Deziel of North Dakota State as well as the teams in seed order from Arizona State, Washington, Stanford, LSU, Oregno, Nevada, Liberty, BYU, UAB, Houston, UC Davis, Denver, Abilene Christian and Weber State.
The top five teams and the low individual not from that team in each of the six regionals will advance to the 2022 NCAA Championship. That is scheduled to be held from May 27-June 1 at Grahawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
