Marques Johnson led the Dirtbags to a series win over UCI, earning his first ever weekly conference honor.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the first time in his career, Marques Johnson has been named Big West Pitcher of the Week. The fourth year junior led the Dirtbags to a series victory over rival UC Irvine with a dominant performance on Saturday.
The right-hander combined with Devereaux Harrison to shutout UCI for the team's fifth of the season, which ranks ninth most in all of NCAA.
Johnson put together the best start of his career against the Anteaters, throwing a career-high seven innings and 102 pitches. He did not allow a run in the outing while surrendering just five baserunners with only one getting into scoring position.
The right-hander struck six while issuing three, but did not factor into the decision.
The Saturday win gave the Dirtbags their first series win of the Black and Blue Rivalry since the 2017 season.
